Open Letter to the Mainstream Media
Dear Media:
I realize you’re really busy right now covering the resignation of HBO’s chief and that whole messy Paris Hilton business, but I’d like to point out a major story you seem to have missed.
Apparently on Tuesday, a majority of the Iraqi Parliament voted to reject the U.S. occupation of their country and called for a timetable for troop withdrawal: Read the rest of this entry »
The I-Word
For everyone out there wondering why President Bush hasn’t been impeached, Salon’s Greg Kamiya explains it for you:
The main reason is obvious: The Democrats think it’s bad politics. Bush is dying politically and taking the GOP down with him, and impeachment is risky. It could, so the cautious Beltway wisdom has it, provoke a backlash, especially while the war is still going on. Why should the Democrats gamble on hitting the political jackpot when they’re likely to walk away from the table big winners anyway? Read the rest of this entry »
What Will It Take?
It seems there’s nothing this President can do short of aborting babies on national television that will wake some people up.
I’m referring to this James Comey business. This isn’t the usual Bush-league incompetence, this is calculated crookery of “Godfather” proportions.
If you aren’t up to speed, read the transcript of Comey’s testimony as soon as you can. Read the rest of this entry »
Guess Who’s Investigating Karl Rove
The Los Angeles Times reports today that the Office of Special Counsel will investigate Karl Rove’s various and sundry shenanigans in Washington, including the U.S. Attorney firings:
“We will take the evidence where it leads us,” Scott J. Bloch, head of the Office of Special Counsel and a presidential appointee, said in an interview Monday. “We will not leave any stone unturned.” Read the rest of this entry »
Confronting Karl Rove
Sheryl Crow and Laurie David are amazing women for a lot of reasons, but when they spoke the truth about global warming to the puppetmaster himself — Karl Rove — they became my heroes.
You can read about the exchange on their blog at Huffington Post. Rove was typically rude, condescending, and unmoved — no surprise there. But here’s what I thought was the most telling part of the exchange: Read the rest of this entry »
Learning The Lessons Of Jerry Falwell
On hearing that Rev. Jerry Falwell had passed my pastor told me, “I’m going to be a Christian, and not say a word.”
I am quite certain pastor Jim is a much better Christian than me, but I’m not sure remaining silent is the thing to do. Falwell was much too powerful a figure in American culture for Christians to remain silent now that he’s gone. Read the rest of this entry »
“Clap Louder” Is Not A Strategy
I love the whiff of desperation in the morning, it smells like recycled GOP talking points.
I’m referring to the new “victory strategy” for Iraq from the right wing. It’s called–no, I’m not making this up–”We Win, They Lose.” No, I won’t link to it. Google it if you’re interested, or check some lefty blogs that have it posted (like this one.) However, “We Win, They Lose” pretty much sums up the plan. We’re gonna win, see? That’s all you need to know. Move along, now. Read the rest of this entry »
Chocolate or Mockolate?
OK, this means war. Big Food has asked its lapdogs at the FDA to redefine chocolate:
The Chocolate Manufacturers Association, whose members include Hershey, Nestle SA and Archer Daniels Midland Co., has a petition before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to redefine what constitutes chocolate. They want to make it without the required ingredients of cocoa butter and cocoa solids, using instead artificial sweeteners, milk substitutes and vegetable fats such as hydrogenated and trans fats. Because The One In Berlin Worked So Well
Yes folks, it’s the Baghdad Wall:
The US military is building a three-mile-long wall around Baghdad’s Sunni neighborhood of Adhamiyah in order to isolate it from the surrounding Shiite areas, and prevent sectarian attacks.
Stars and Stripes, a newspaper published for the US military community serving abroad, reported Thursday that according to a military press release, personnel began construction on the wall on April 10, and will continue work “almost nightly” until it is complete. Read the rest of this entry »
Told Ya So
Remember those warm and fuzzy $2.05-gasoline prices from last October? Ah, good times, good times.
Well, it’s looking like oil companies really did manipulate the gasoline supply last fall, in an effort to keep the GOP in power:
By the second week in October, gasoline prices fell 70 cents from summer’s record highs. Refineries were running full throttle and America’s gasoline inventories were up nearly 7 percent from the three previous Octobers. Read the rest of this entry »
