PostHeaderIcon More Stories I Don’t Want To See

Please, corporate media, spare us the national news coverage of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s wardrobe. I know after that schlub Dennis Hastert, Pelosi is a stylistic breath of fresh air. But since the Washington Post got a righteous smackdown for its fatuous Pelosi-pantsuit coverage last November, I thought y’all would have learned your lesson.

Alas, today’s Baltimore Sun carried a 1,500-word story on the Speaker’s fashion sense, wherein we are treated to such gems as this:

To be classified as chic or especially stylish requires the wearer to possess a certain flair for fashion that often crosses those implied boundaries. Wearing an unexpected color or pattern, perhaps. Or adding a scarf to a business suit, or a bold piece of jewelry.

Pelosi has, at some point, done all these things, and then some, with success.

Thank you for this insightful look at the Distinguished Gentlewoman from California. I am sure that as she prepares to launch the Democrats’ agenda, things like implementing the 9/11 Commission recommendations and raising the minimum wage will have to take a back seat to more pressing questions, such as “Plaid? Or paisley?”

Seriously, it would be nice if the corporate media didn’t still treat women in power as if they were show dogs. I don’t recall anyone writing 1,500 word stories on Dennis Hastert or Tom DeLay’s style sense.
